Description

The area shown on this map is divided into three parts. In the north is part of the hilly and mountainous Upper Palatinate Forest, which is still part of the "Upper Bavarian Forest" nature park. It is criss-crossed by cycle and hiking trails such as the Grünes Dach cycle path, the Goldsteig and the Pandurensteig. This is followed by the flat Cham-Further depression with large wetlands (important meadow breeding area) and remnants of the former alluvial forest. The eponymous towns of Cham (the "town on the rainbow") and Furth im Wald (famous for its annual "Drachenstich" (dragon sting) in August) can look back on a long history. Further south is the Bavarian Forest, which rises to ever greater heights from west to east. Starting with the Haidstein near Cham via the Hoher Bogen (just over 1000m), it goes up to the Osser (1293m) on the Czech border and the Großer Arber (1456m, the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest) on the other side of the Lamer Winkel. Down in the valley, the Lamer Winkel offers the Bavarian Forest Animal Park, a show mine, a high ropes course and the Kleiner Arbersee lake with its three floating (!) islands (see also the cover photo).
